See that dark thing that just flitted from view?
Was it a thought
Of someone you once knew?
Was it a man who waits to jump out on you?
Or an interested ghost
Just passing through and watching you?
A memory perhaps of something past
That you want to remember
But dare not lest it ruffles your water.
A missed opportunity that would have led you
To greater things than mediocrity
Had you only known at the time.
A flickering second that moves out of sync
With the way you chose to see,
That threatens circumstantial stability.
A dark thing that moved beyond the edge
Of the vision you maintain
To justify everything you do.
But maybe a guardian angel.
They too can be dark.
